People and organizations tend to have a fixed notion of who they are or who they want to become. Both have a powerful, nearly obsessive desire to be congruent with their identity (who they believe they are) and to remain consistent to their actions (what was previously done).  In times of uncertainty People and Organizations hold on to that fixed identity they have for themselves because it is familiar.  Consistency is highly valued.  If a person’s beliefs, words and deeds don’t match, they may be seen as indecisive, untrustworthy, or confused.  If an organization or team behaves this way they are considered to be weak, conflicted, or unstable or ineffectual.

PATTERNS OF BEHAVIOR

We look at these notions as patterns.  They are not judgments about good and bad, right vs. wrong.  If you react and engage emotionally with a pattern, you sustain and maintain that pattern.  You become a victim of it and  propagate the very pattern you’d like to change.  When people or organizations fall into the habit of being consistent even when it does not make sense they stop thinking proactively.  They go on automatic pilot.  These patterns can be dangerous, even disastrous.

As companies grow they have predictable patterns of behavior. Executives and leaders in a company bring their own leadership style and behaviors into the organization. Knowing which patterns are productive and identifying those that are not are the keys to having an organization realize its financial goals and create an environment where people can flourish.
