SELF AWARENESS : A Different Type of Leadership
A DIFFERENT KIND OF LEADERSHIP
This may be counter rational: the more the leader tries to exert power directly the less powerful you become. Learn to dial back the ego and distribute power as widely as possible without surrendering final authority.
Stay out of your head and feel into your heart as a leader. Compassion is the most important characteristic of great leaders. Its not a form of charity or rescue. It begins with compassion for oneself. This key to breaking down barriers among other people is starting with the Self.
Focus on the journey rather than the goal. It’s a bond, a brotherhood, sisterhood which normally is virtually impossible to replicate in normal life, but can be done by creating a bond with the team within the organization.
The key is getting a critical mass of the staff to buy into a more selfless approach to the strategic plan and the game of work.
That mysterious alchemy that allows divergent people with different archetypes to join together and work for a higher cause. This is the intense emotional connection that great warriors experience in the heart of battle.
Play the game of life and business the right way. Have the courage to grow as a human being and mentor others to grow and evolve themselves. Then revenue and profits take care of themselves.
From Phil Jackson coach of the Knicks and the Lakers: “Transforming a group of ambitious individuals into an integrated high performing team is not a mechanistic process”.
Its organic and iterative – that is, it is a continual form of finding your trimtab – small incremental decisions that take no effort or time and change everything. Make all process simple because it automatically stimulates creativity and teamwork, freeing them from learning new tips and techniques.
Foster an environment where everyone plays a leadership role. If your primary objective is to bring the company into harmony and oneness, it doesn’t make sense for you to rigidly impose your authority. Get the team to think for themselves so they can make difficult decisions in the heat of battle.
It’s a mysterious juggling act that requires Self Awareness through knowledge of the time-honored laws of the life. It requires an open heart, a clear mind, and a deep curiosity about the ways of the human spirit.
You can force or impose it on the team. The best you can do is to create the conditions that will promote that sort of transformation. Create a clearing for transformation in your company. Make something meaningful out of the most mundane activities. If you place too many structure and too many processes on the organization, most of them will spend an inordinate amount of time trying to buck the system.
What the staff needs is a way to quiet the chatter in their minds and let them focus on the business of “winning” – creating value for the company through its culture.
